2018 Award-Winners Announced

BLYTHEWOOD CHAMBER REVEALS 2018 BUSINESS AWARD-WINNERS

Celebration at Mingle & Jingle Gala on December 7th, 2018

Blythewood, SC, November 29, 2018– The following businesses and individuals will be honored for their achievements and service at the Greater Blythewood Chamber of Commerce 3rd Annual Mingle & Jingle Awards Gala, to be held December 7th, 2018 at Doko Manor in Blythewood’s Doko Meadows Park.

• Business Person of the Year: Jerry Rega, Regal Prints
• Small Business of the Year: Sweet Pea’s Ice Cream Parlor (Susan DeMarco and Jamie Harkness)
• Large Business of the Year: Providence Health Northeast (Lindy White, CEO)
• Community Service Award of the Year: Phil Frye (Peak Brokerage Services)

“We received many worthy nominations this year, making the final choices very difficult”, said Deborah Humphries, chair of the Gala Committee at the Blythewood Chamber. “This year’s winners exemplify success, hard work, and giving back.”

Jerry Rega defines being an entrepreneur and business leader. He started Regal Prints in 2002 in his 40’s with nothing more than a vision, loans and a desire to control his destiny. Armed with his 20+ years’ experience in corporate America he took a dream and turned it into a thriving business with 3 locations, including the recent purchase of Capital City Printing in downtown Columbia. Jerry finds time to give back to the community whether it’s donating printed materials to the Sparkle Caps Project that provides cancer patients a gift bag for their 1st chemo session, and encouraging high school students by partnering with local high schools, donating time, material and services to teachers. He has a passion to help fellow entrepreneurs get their printed materials to make their business successful and that means giving the same time, energy, and respect to all of his customers, regardless of size. Finally, Jerry provides his employees with a flexible work environment so they can balance work and family life. Character matters when it comes to being a leader and Jerry definitely meets that criteria in every way.

Since February of this year, Providence Health-Northeast‘s volumes have grown almost 50% in a time when many hospitals struggle for 1%. During their transition from a specialty orthopedic hospital to a full-service community hospital, they have begun offering urology, cardiology, general surgery, and outpatient imaging, and obtained the first and only Mako robotic surgery in the Midlands. The Emergency Room has been streamlined so patients can be seen sooner, and now they have some of the shortest ER wait times in the region. Soon, PHNE will also have a new Cath Lab, Nuclear Medicine, and a Cystoscopy Room. It’s not the same hospital we knew only a year ago and because of that, we’re all going to benefit. In fact, earlier this year, the triage and ER staff of this facility literally saved the life of one of tonight’s award winners!

Sweet Pea’s Ice Cream is seemingly everywhere these days. Not only do they advertise relentlessly on social media and at local athletic events, but they take their show on the road through their mobile cart which had a never-ending line at the 4th of July event at Doko Meadows Park. Susan and Jamie also give back to the community, such as serving ice cream to underprivileged families during Richland School District Two’s summer feeding program, collecting warm clothes for the homeless, and school supplies for the needy. Sweet Pea’s also received some nice publicity when WLTX reported in August that the Blythewood ice cream shop was one of the first eateries in the Midlands to offer recyclable straws. Mrs. DeMarco and Mrs. Harkness are not only determined to make their business a success but also to stay invested in their community.

Phil Frye seems to be present at every chamber function. He attends all the ribbon cuttings, volunteers for committees, personally delivers chamber information to the town’s business community, serves on the chamber board, and is the current board chair-elect. He exhibits an ambassador-like quality for the Blythewood Chamber wherever he is, always giving freely of his time.

All of this year’s winners have made a tremendous impact on the quality of life in Blythewood and are being deservedly honored!  Please join us in honoring these individuals and businesses at the 3rd Annual Mingle and Jingle Awards Gala on December 7th, 2018 at Doko Manor. Reserve your seats now!
